Last Updated 15 July 2013, 17:37 IST

The delay in the announcement of reservation for the posts of presidents and vice-presidents in urban local bodies, has slowed down the development work in Virajpet, Somwarpet and Kushalnagar town panchayats.

Amidst the delay, the state election commission requesting the government to hand over the power to the commission to announce the reservation for town panchayats, has created curiosity.

The reservation system was introduced in the governance to provide equal opportunities to Dalits, Muslims and backward communities. Candidates from the reserved category are given opportunities based on rotation. The state government had the power to fix the reservation all these years. But in the last few years, the political parties, ruling parties in precise, are interfering in this process of announcing reservation, so as to enable their party candidates to hold the power. This has been creating delay in the announcement of reservation list.

The town panchayats in Virajpet, Somwarpet and Kushalnagar had completed their term five months ago. And term of Madikeri City municipal Council too had ended last month. With it, the administration is in the hands of the officers.

The election for the three panchayats was held in March. There was delay in forming the council due to the assembly elections. It is said that the Congress which attained power in the assembly elections, is delaying the announcement of reservation list, with an intention to hold power in urban local bodies too.

The delay in the formation of council, has delayed the development work too. Several important decisions are not taken by the administrators who are now in-charge of the local bodies. The rain has created havoc in the district damaging roads, bridges and school buildings. There is an urgent need to start the relief work, which which requires the nod of elected representatives.
