Koragas in DK to get smart cards

'This will help them to avail health care in nine government hospitals'

The Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat is working on issuing smart cards to 4,588 Koraga community members in the district for availing health benefits in the selected nine government hospitals, said the outgoing ZP Chief Executive Officer Dr K N Vijayaprakash.

Addressing mediapersons before handing over the charge to the new CEO Thulasi Maddineni at ZP hall on Monday, Vijayaprakash said the smart card to be issued to Koraga families will include details on the health and ailments of an individual, their social and economic background, government facilities they have obtained, sites allotted, benefits under housing schemes etc. The survey on gathering data is nearing completion and the and the process of developing smart cards will commence shortly, he said, adding that autorickshaws and cabs have already been given to youth from Koraga families with an intention to boost self-employment.

Briefing about various schemes and programmes that were taken up and completed during his tenure, the CEO said he was quite satisfied with the innovative programmes implemented by the education department, health department and sanitation programmes in gram panchayats. “Apart from  winning awards for sanitation like Nirmal Gram Puraskar, Gourav Gram Sabha Puraskar, the panchayats in Dakshina Kannada have succeeded in implementing innovative programmes to promote cleanliness. Napkin unit in Laila gram panchayat has  been honoured as one among the 30 best rural innovations in India by NABARD. Solid waste management system has been implemented in 33 gram panchayats and the process is underway in 30 other gram panchayats.”

Several initiatives were taken up under the education department too. In one of such initiatives, co-operative societies in the district have pooled Rs eight lakh for the development of physically challenged children.

All the 2102 anganawadis in the district have been given electricity connection, Vijayaprakash said.

On the flip side, he expressed regrets for not succeeding in effectively implementing housing schemes, multi-village water supply scheme, house and site distribution for Koragas.
