Minister cornered on sand mining

Last Updated 16 July 2013, 21:55 IST

Minister for Public Works H C Mahadevappa on Tuesday drew flak from the Opposition members in the Legislative Council over his reply on illegal mining.

In his written reply to Bharathi Shetty (BJP),  Mahadevappa had stated that he was not aware of the illegal sand mining in the State.

However, when Leela Rao (BJP) furnished a series of newspaper reports on illegal sand mining, he admitted that the government was aware of the menace and has appointed a Cabinet sub-committee to address the issue. However, the Opposition members cut him short by saying that he was contradicting his own reply. BJP MLC Siddaraju said, “When you have admitted illegal mining, why are you denying it on paper?”

The minister defended himself saying that he never furnished a wrong reply. Siddaraju shot back, saying, “Then why have you formed the committee? Most of the illegal sand mining happens in chief minister’s home district, Mysore” said BJP member Narayanaswamy.
