An ethnic Indian secondary school teacher was gunned down by an unidentified gunman in Malaysia's Kedah state today, police said.

The victim, K Shanmugam, 45, had stopped at a traffic intersection in Kulim town when one of the two men on a motorcycle pumped nine bullets in him at point blank range.

A police spokesman said Shanmugam was found dead in the front passenger seat of the vehicle, succumbing to injuries sustained from multiple gunshots.

The spokesman said the assailant was believed to be armed with a 9mm automatic pistol and the police has retrieved nine bullet shells from the scene.

The motive for the shooting is yet to be determined and the case has been classified as murder by the police.
