Run over by BMTC bus, boy loses foot

Last Updated 18 July 2013, 20:03 IST

A day after a BMTC bus ran him over near Cantonment Railway Station, five-year-old Chandan had his right foot amputated at Hosmat Hospital here on Thursday.

Dr Ajith Benedict Ryan of the hospital said the boy’s foot was so badly crushed that it had to be amputated. Midfoot amputation was carried out on him.

“If we had not gone for amputation, it could have led to Septicemia that might have threatened his life,” Dr Ryan explained.

Reconstruction surgery

The child would have to undergo a reconstruction surgery and thereafter he could walk normally using an artificial foot, the doctor added.

Chandan and his mother Jayanthi (40) were waiting to board an auto to Vasanth Nagar when the BMTC bus ran close, crushing their feet.

The mother and son had gone to KGF to attend  a funeral.

Jayanthi held Chandan’s hand as they waited to cross the road when the accident occurred. They writhed in pain and were rushed to Hosmat Hospital.

‘Life ruined’

According to Ravi Kumar, the accident had ruined his son’s life. Kumar, a milk vendor from Vasanth Nagar, said he could not afford the expensive treatment.

Dr Ryan said that the hospital would bear the child’s complete medical expenses under the Hosmat Accident Trauma and Poor Patients’ Foundation if the family could not afford treatment.

Meanwhile, High Grounds traffic police booked a case against the BMTC driver under Sections 279 for rash and negligent driving and 337 of the IPC for causing hurt by committing an act endangering life or personal safety of others.
