Last Updated 04 May 2018, 11:09 IST

A man in a wheelchair was injured when he set off an explosion at the Beijing International Airport today.

The explosion was heard in Terminal 3 of the airport at 6:24 pm (local time), witnesses said.

State-run CCTV said the man injured in the blast was 34-year-old Ji Zhongxing from Heze in Shandong Province.

He set off a home-made explosive device packed with gunpowder from fireworks. There were no other casualties.

CCTV did not give details on the man's condition or a possible motive for his action.

Photos posted by several witnesses on micro-blogging site Weibo, the Chinese equivalent of Twitter, showed the man in the wheelchair waving his arms and holding up a white object before the blast.

Another photo showed several security and cleaning staff attending to a person beside an overturned wheelchair.

Local media reported that the man was rushed to hospital.

Officials said order had been restored after the incident.
