Now, poll code derails Palike budget

Last Updated 20 July 2013, 20:08 IST

After the squabbling in the ruling BJP in Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) over caretaker Mayor Venkatesh Murthy presenting the ‘Congress’ budget, the model code of conduct for the byelection to the Bangalore Rural Lok Sabha constituency has come in the way of tabling the budget.

According to BBMP sources, at least 14 wards of the Palike fall under the Rural constituency.

The BBMP may not be able to table the budget till the completion of the election process.

However, BBMP will seek permission from the Election Commission of India (ECI) to
permit it to present the budget. Palike commissioner, M Lakshminarayana, is optimistic that the ECI will grant them the permission.

Earlier it was the Assembly elections, then came the delay in the election of new Mayor due to litigation and finally, the internal strife in the BJP, which prevented Murthy from presenting the budget.

The Palike administration had cleared almost all the hurdles for the budget when the model code of conduct put paid to its efforts.
