A carjacker was killed in a shootout during a hot pursuit over a robbed car in outer Delhi’s Rohini on Monday. A Delhi Police constable was also shot at in the incident and the Ford Endeavour car was recovered within an hour.

The accused was rushed to Maharishi Valmiki Hospital, where he was declared brought dead.
“Efforts are on to establish the identity of the criminal. A massive manhunt has also been launched to nab the other culprit. The injured constable is undergoing treatment for gunshot wound in his right thigh,” said Sanjay Kumar, Additional Commissioner of Police (outer).
Around 2:15 pm, the two men robbed the car at gunpoint near Sachdeva Public School in Rohini sector-13. “An immediate search was launched across outer district for the vehicle and culprits,” Kumar added.

During a checking at Ghogha crossing picket under Narela police limits, constables Baljeet Singh Chahal and A S Bohara spotted the car. “It was without a number plate and going towards Sannoth village,” Kumar said.

Suspecting that the number plates might have been removed by the culprits, the constables started chasing them.

Meanwhile, the car hit a sidewall on a narrow road in Sannoth village and came to a halt.
“Both the constables then surrounded it and challenged the culprits,” he added.

As the constables tried to take the accused out of their vehicle, a scuffle ensued in which the carjackers opened fire at the police personnel.

“Baljeet was hit in his right thigh. In self-defence, Baljeet also fired from his service pistol and one of the culprits got injured,” Kumar said.

The other culprit managed to escape taking advantage of the commotion. A country-made pistol and five cartridges of 7.62 mm caliber have been recovered.

A case under the Indian Penal Code and Arms Act has been filed with the Narela police station.
