Police check 999 bikes, 94 challaned

Two-wheeler riders created ruckus with policemen on Tuesday night when they were stopped while performing dangerous stunts and driving rashly near India Gate on Gurpurab.

Altogether 999 two-wheelers had been checked and 94 were fined for violating traffic rules. “When they were stopped for violating traffic and driving rashly on the roads at Tilak Marg area, they started misbehaving and arguing with policemen deputed at the pickets,” said S B S Tyagi, deputy commissioner of police (New Delhi).

A group of around 20 bikers driving rashly, honking continuously and performing stunts suddenly were stopped near Tilak Marg where police had erected temporary barricades. When asked for documents of these bikes and driving licences, they misbehaved with the policemen and alleged that all officials deputed were drunk. When senior police officers pitched in, the bikers accepted their mistakes and thereafter they were allowed to go.

But as soon as they entered India Gate area, they started honking and driving rashly again. But as they moved a few metres, there had to stop seeing another police barricade. The senior police officers warned them and thereafter were allowed to leave again. The biker complied and left the place silently.

Meanwhile, police had erected various check-posts to check and penalise the vehicles’ owners flouting traffic rules. “We have checked 999 bikes between Tuesday night and Wednesdy morning and fined 94 for traffic violation and not having requisite documents like driving licence and ownership papers. We have impounded 18 bikes,” said Tyagi, adding it was a routine check carried out by police. “This has nothing to do with the ongoing festival,” added Tyagi.

However, large numbers of policemen were deployed on Tuesday night at and on roads linking to India Gate after police a day ago witnessed bikers flouting traffic and performing dangerous stunts mainly on Parliament Street, near RML Hospital and Gurdwara Bangla Sahib and a few at CP on Gurpurab eve.
