Jolly ousted in quarters

Tennis Junior Nationals: Karnatakas challenge in singles comes to an end

Fifth-seeded Prakash put up a steady show against Prannoy of Air India but was sent packing by the third seed 21-16, 21-16 to sail into the semifinals at the PET Sports Complex courts.

Prakash couldn’t emulate the form that helped him to post a hard-fought 21-12, 18-21, 21-17 win over Srikanth of Andhra Pradesh in the pre-quarterfinals.

To his credit, Prannoy played the crucial points well and worked his way to game point in the first game which he clinched with a powerful smash.

Prakash, who trains at the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy in Bangalore, showed more agility in the second game. Trailing 5-8, the 17-year-old conjured up three points on the trot to level the scores at 8-all.

The Karnataka lad then surprised his rival with couple of smashes that went whistling past Prannoy to shoot into a four-point lead at 15-11. However, Prakash failed to sustain that momentum, committing too many unforced errors to surrender the game and match to bow out in the quarterfinals.

Prannoy set up a semifinal date with top seed B Sumeet Reddy of Andhra Pradesh, who survived a scare for the third successive match before winning his last eight match against N V S Vijetha 14-21, 21-14, 21-17.
