A total of 982 students of Sophia High School recently staged a production called ‘The Alternative Snow White’ in their school auditorium. As the name suggests, the play was loosely based on the plot of the fairytale but with a generous dose of comedy as well.

With a large choir, superb dancers and flawless acting, the play was indeed a delight to watch. Every scene had a touch of professionalism and it was obvious that hours of practice had gone into making the production what it was.

The play began on an arresting note, with a passionate monologue by the magic mirror. Seizing the audience’s attention with mentions of attempted murder and other such dramatic events, she went over the elements of the play. A short dance sequence later, the Queen emerged, immediately establishing herself as a key character in the play with her flawless performance and perfect comic timing.

Clearly, the hours of practice that went into putting together the production were enjoyed immensely by the team. Sister Mary Priscilla, the principal of the school, says, “In a society driven by jealousy, this play teaches us that there’s much goodness around if one decides to sense it. It was fulfilling to see the never-ending energy of the hundreds of students who are part of this. It brought us closer and taught us lessons in teamwork and selfless giving.”

The song and dance sequences added immensely to the experience and were perfectly-rehearsed and beautifully executed. Ragini, an 11th standard student who was one of the dancers in the play, says, “We practised for nearly three months for this play. Our sequence is mostly ballet, but there are all kinds of other dances in it as well. We had staged this yesterday also and the response was quite good — the hall was packed.”

The play was directed by Ashley William Joseph, the director of the William Joseph International Academy for Performing Arts.
