Director General of Prisons Vishwanath on Thursday said a report will be submitted to the government in a couple to days with regards to the suicide attempt by Shivu Munishetty, a convict lodged at the Central Prisons at Hindalaga here.

Munishetty and Jade Rangashetty have been sentenced to death for the rape and murder of an 18-year-old girl in Chamarajanagar district in 2001. He  attempted to cut his hand and private parts in a bid to commit suicide at the prison on Wednesday.

The incident took place on the day when the Supreme Court stayed the execution of the duo, following a petition by them after the President Pranab Mukherjee had rejected their mercy plea.

Speaking to reporters, Vishwanath said: “Munishetty did not attempt suicide. He did this only to seek publicity.”

Jail medical officer Dr V M Yamakanamaradi said that Munishetty was recovering.
