True path to righteousness

Last Updated 22 August 2013, 20:55 IST

Guru Brahmaa Guru Vishnu...Guru Devo Maheshwara...Guru Saakshaata Parabrahma.. Tasmai Shri Gurave Namah!

The above “Guru Mantra”  forms an integral part of the act of worship in the hindu religion and of following a “Guru” (a teacher). In fact, in Hindu society it is believed that a person who dies without a Guru has led a useless life. Therefore, a baby is taken to receive blessings from the family Guru. Later, when he or she grows up and starts schooling, work, marital life etc, he or she is expected to seek the latter’s advice and blessing at each step.

The Guru shares the wisdom  he has gained from studying scriptures and various practices with the average house-holders, who themselves do not have time to study such details. Family members look upon their Guru with profound sense of respect. However, this cordial relation tends to become unrealistic when the ‘Guru’ begins to take the seat of the almighty Lord. It is then that there is a dire need to draw a clear line between the human Guru and the ‘Satguru’ the Supreme.

We must understand a fact that founders of all the religions had many times mentioned in their teachings that they are not God. Unfortunately, most devout followers of religion today worship their founding fathers and even Gurus, as the Supreme Father. To save ourselves from such misleading situation,we need to first understand the functions of a Guru —  those primarily goal is to guide his followers on the path of liberation and to establish communion with Supreme Almighty. Other than this, claims made about Gurus being capable of abolishing sins or that guru being above all the deities etc, can be true only for the one “Satguru who is Supreme Almighty” and not for any human beings.

Whether the gurus desire or not but they will be reborn  in this world of drama after leaving their old body. Secondly, the concept of abolishing another person's sins is itself contradictory to the law of karma. As per the karmic philosophy, every soul receives rewards or punishments according to his/ her actions which is what gives balance to the entire life system. So, if anyone claims to finish or reduce the impact of sins committed by a person, he is only challenging nature's law. Only the Supreme Almighty can purifiy sinners — that too by giving them the knowledge of right and wrong, which again one has to practically follow to absolve their own sins and create their own fortune.

Today, negative vibes and feelings seem to rule the minds of people, as a result of which souls are unable to find a permanent refuge in religion. Learned souls themselves confess to the lack of power and are internally looking for a hopeful sign from above.

Hence, all these symptoms point towards that auspicious time when He, the Supreme being, will play the role of Guide and lead all souls on the true path of Liberation in Life (Jeevan Mukti). So, let us all connect with one 'Satguru' who alone can show us the real light, leaving aside all other mediums.
