Over 800 cases of rape were reported in the capital in the first six months of 2013, but Delhi Police insist that they are committed to providing a safer environment for women.

The gang rape of a 22-year-old photo-journalist in Mumbai on Friday has once again triggered an outrage across the country similar to what followed the gang rape of a 23-year-old para-medical student in the capital in December last year.

According to Delhi Police, 806 cases of rape were reported from January 1 to June 30 compared to 706 cases registered during 2012. Most of the cases were reported from east Delhi, followed by south-east Delhi and south-west Delhi. Police, however, claims of solving 82 per cent of the cases within the first week and seven per cent in the second week of investigation.

A senior police officer highlighted that vulnerable areas have been identified where pro-active policing is required in the interest of women’s safety. “Security audit of women’s hostels and paying guest accommodations are also being done,” he said.

Hostel wardens and owners of paying guest accommodations have been advised regarding the shortfalls in security systems in place and measures required to be taken by them.
