The proposed hike in Nandini milk prices are likely to be discussed at the meeting of the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) board scheduled for Monday.

Though the milk price hike is not part of the meeting agenda, the issue is likely to be taken up for discussion following the State government's decision to throw the issue back in the KMF's court.

The KMF board recently took the decision to hike Nandini milk prices by Rs 3 per litre.

The Federation had sought the government's permission to give effect to the hike from August 8. Normally, the KMF hikes the prices only after obtaining the government's nod.

Animal Husbandry Minister T B Jayachandra, however, recently said the KMF is free to hike the prices if it wants to mobilise resources.

Official sources said the KMF may hike the prices after Ganesha festival (September 9). The Board has already cleared the proposal. Hence, there is no need for it to again approve it, sources added.

When contacted, KMF Managing Director Premnath said the decision will be taken after consulting the board chairman G Somashesakar Reddy and other members.

“The KMF has been deferring increasing the prices in the interest of consumers. But the steep hike in fuel prices would force it to implement the proposed hike in coming days,” he stated.

The Federation's finances are already under severe stress due to increase in milk production. Increase in fuel prices is badly affecting it, he added.
