Suspecting fidelity, a man stabbed his wife on Tuesday morning at Vijnanapura. The condition of the victim, Yasmin Taj, in her early 30s, is said to be critical.

Taj was married to Mazar Sherief, a tailor, nine years ago. The couple have three young children. Police sources say that Sherief was a chronic alcoholic and was harassing Taj and other members of the family. He also suspected the fidelity of Taj and the couple were having frequent fights over this.

On Tuesday, the couple had a tiff and when the argument went out of hand, Sherief picked up a kitchen knife and repeatedly stabbed Taj in the abdomen. He fled the scene soon after as his wife collapsed in a pool of blood. Neighbours rushed her to a nearby private hospital and from there to Bowring Hospital, where she is being treated. Ramamurthy Nagar police have registered a case of attempt to murder against Sherief.
