Lack of time reason for defeat: Hegde

Last Updated 20 May 2009, 19:48 IST

Defeated by his rival BJP State President D V Sadananda Gowda, Hegde opined that time was short to play more effective fight in the poll fray and success was not far if the candidature was announced a little earlier. Neither of the both, the party nor the nominee should be targeted individually for the defeat. Both should be held equally responsible, he opined.

Speaking to media here on Wednesday, he said that BJP never expected the victory to be usual and were embarrassed with the success achieved in a low winning margin. It became impossible to take up campaigning programme in every nook and corner of constituency with minimum number of days. It was the fight given within the prescribed limitations, he opined.

He said that people have chosen UPA for stability and it is the verdict given in favour of farsighted economic policies put forth by Manmohan Singh. The very first day after UPA’s victory gestured a positive sign in the sensex scenario where equity market had the investment of more than Rs 3000 crores. “Even though I am not an MP, it would be easy to get financial grants sanctioned as UPA will be the power in the Centre. I will try to get maximum allocations”, he added.  Speaking on the occasion, District Congress President M A Gafoor said that the party is disappointed with the defeat besides being pleased to gain about 3.70 lakh votes in the strong forte of BJP. Party will take the decision regarding my resignation, he added.

Congress District General Secretary Narasimhamurthy, District Congress Women Wing President Veronica Cornelio, Block President Diwaker Kunder, District Youth Congress President Prasanna Kumar and others were present.
