Tamil Nadu asks Centre to bear RTE expenses

Last Updated 11 October 2013, 22:25 IST

The Tamil Nadu (TN) government on Friday demanded that the Centre should either share or fully bear the expenditure to support children from underprivileged background under the Right To Education (RTE) Act.

"As per the RTE Act, 25 per cent reservation is to be provided in all private schools wherein children belonging the weaker section and disadvantaged groups are to be admitted. As per section 12 (2) of the act, the expenditure per child incurred by the State shall be reimbursed to the schools admitting such children", State Higher Education Minister P Palaniappan said.

Pointing out that in the current academic year 49,864 students have been admitted in TN  in reserved category, the minister said the pattern of reimbursement is yet to be indicated by the Centre.

“If it is to be met out of SSA funds, the same would have to be included in the plan for the year 2013-14 ,” the minister added.
