CBI to form special team to probe mining cases

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has decided form a special team to investigate the cases related to illegal mining in Karnataka. Additional Director of CBI and senior IPS officer from the State, Roopkumar Dutta, will lead the team.

The special team has been formed to reduce the burden on CBI, particularly its Bangalore branch, given the plethora of cases it has beeen entrusted to investigate. Senior officers from Delhi and Chennai will be part of the special team. Dr P Subramanyeshwara Rao, the SP of Bangalore Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) will also be part of the special team.

The ACB registered seven cases pertaining to illegal mining in October 2011. Charge sheets have been filed in two cases and probe is on in the remaining five cases. 

Incidently, the State government has handed over the probe into smuggling of iron ore from Belekeri port to CBI even as the latter is yet to yet to begin investigations into the 22 mining cases as directed by Supreme Court.
