Some people really look after their nails, while others couldn’t care less. Whether or not you’re the manicure type, you’ll want to seek some help when brittleness, discolouration, ridges or fungal infection turn fingernails or toenails into eyesores. Here are some ways to get them back in shape fast.

*  Eat right for healthy finger nails

If one’s nails are brittle or flaking, try getting more essential fatty acids into the system. These are found in foods such as oily fish (trout, sardines and salmon) and flaxseeds or flaxseed oil.

A well-balanced diet and drinking a lot of water to stay hydrated are just a
few of the simple ways that will promote healthier nails.

*  Moisturise and protect

For dry, brittle nails, rub petroleum jelly or a thick cream into one’s nails to hold moisture around and under them. It’s best to do this during bedtime. Slip a pair of thin cotton gloves on the hands before going to sleep.

*  Stop biting and picking nails

Biting nails or being too aggressive when cleaning out under the nail can create stress fractures on the corners of the edges and eventually cause breaks.

*  Go easy on the water

When you are constantly in water, your nails will become weaker and tear more easily.

*  Weekly nail maintenance essential

Regular manicures, which includes filing the nails and cuticle care, is crucial.

Moisturising the cuticles daily is also a key component to maintaining healthy and beautiful nails.
