Last Updated 20 November 2013, 21:13 IST

The recent announcement of the State government that had declared only four taluks of the district as drought-hit region has created unrest among the people of the district.  For, many rain fed taluks have been not included in the list and those which have sufficient water, have been announced as drought-hit.

The cabinet sub-committee of the State government has included K R Pet, Maddur, Pandavapura and Srirangapatna taluks as drought-hit based on the amount of rainfall and moisture content of soil.

Mandya, Malavalli and Nagamangala taluks of the district have been left out of the list. This has left farmers of these taluks much disappointed.

About 65 per cent of Srirangapatna taluk gets water from KRS reservoir and as per the documents available from the department of Agriculture, 100 per cent sowing activities have been completed in the taluk. But the taluk is said to have faced a shortage of 64 per cent of rainfall during the end of August. More than half of Mandya taluk has been denied of water resources. Though it has been facing 23 per cent deficient rainfall, it has been not included in drought hit list.

While K R Pet, which is identified as drought-hit has completed 91.3 per cent sowing, Nagamangala and Malavalli taluks that have completed only 83.6 per cent and 83.4 per cent sowing respectively, have been left out. Raitha Sangha leader Konasale Narasaraju said the farmers are perplexed with the parameters adopted by the government to identify the taluks.  All the seven taluks have to be announced as drought-hit, as Hemavathy River water has not reached Nagamangala and the tail end regions, he said.
