Two students from City drowned in the sea, off Malpe Beach in Udupi district, early Monday morning. They were part of a group on an outing to the beach.

The two  — Goutham Babu and Roopesh Kumar, both aged 21, jumped into the sea to save a tourist. Both, residents of ITI Layout, Vivekananda Nagar, off Katriguppe, were students of Sri Krishna International Degree College, and had completed their BCom fifth semester. As many as 13 students of the same class had come to the beach on an outing.

Yugandhar, who was part of the group, said that they left City on Friday night and had been to Dharwad, Doodh Sagar Falls and Gokarna before reaching Malpe Sunday night.

On Monday morning, they ventured near the sea when one of the tourists started screaming for help as he was caught amidst high waves.

Goutham Babu, a good swimmer, first jumped into the sea. However, when he was also trapped by high waves, Roopesh Kumar and Dileep went to his rescue. Within minutes all four were out of sight. The other students, he said, sought the help of hawkers on the beach who rushed into the sea with a boat and dragged out Dileep.

The bodies of Goutham Babu and Roopesh Kumar were found a couple of hours later.
Goutham Babu's father Jagadeesh is an advocate and Roopesh Kumar's father Govindappa Naidu works as a clerk with a newspaper office.

Autopsies were conducted at a government hospital in Udupi and bodies were expected to arrive late Monday night.
