'Bhadra upper canal project a conspiracy'

Last Updated 23 November 2009, 17:45 IST

Speaking at an awareness meet organised against the Bhadra Upper Canal Project at Rangenahalli in Tarikere on Sunday, Bhojegowda said that the government, which assured of taking farmers into confidence before implementing the project, is now preparing to take up the work even without holding discussions with farmers. “We did not come here to politicise farmers’ problems. At the same time, we are organising farmers to fight for their rights,” he added.

JDS state Vice-President H T Rajendra said that the State government did not give proper clarification with regard to the project so far. The plan of the project has been prepared in the absence of farmers. Government is trying to create rift between farmers of different villages. People should fight unitedly, since the project is anti-farmers, he added.

CPI leader H M Renukaradhya said that the district which caters water to half of the State is not being provided with adequate water. Instead of political leaders, all religious leaders should unite for the cause of farmers, he added.

District Youth Congress President Sachin Meega said that the government is going to implement the project without paying heed to people’s objections forcefully. With the implementation of the project, the problems of the farmers will increase, he added.  Former MLA B R Neelakantappa, Raitha Sangha state Vice-President M Mahesh, Congress leader N Raju, T V Shivashankarappa, Zilla Panchayat member Subramanya and Abdul Ghanisab spoke about the project on the occasion. CPI taluk secretary C R Basavaraj, Zilla Panchayat member Chandramma Manjunath, villagers of Baragenahalli, Huruvanahalli, Shanthipura, Gurupura and Guddadabeeranahalli were present.
