India on Thursday clarified that the American Embassy in New Delhi continued to be covered by an extensive security arrangement even after the traffic barricades were withdrawn last month in reaction to the arrest of Indian Foreign Service officer Devyani Khobragade in New York.

New Delhi also clarified that not only the US Embassy, but the security around the American School and American Centre in the capital also remained unchanged.

Official sources said that as many as 150 police personnel were being deployed during 24-hour period in shifts at the US Embassy, American School and American Centre in New Delhi.

Fifty police personnel are deployed at any given time in Chanakyapuri near the US Embassy, said sources, adding that two police vehicles had been permanently stationed along various roads near the embassy including the Nyaya Marg.

“There is 24x7 patrolling to ensure smooth flow of traffic and traffic calming measures including speed breakers are in place said sources while indicating that this level of security is by far the most that is provided to any embassy in New Delhi,” an official source said on Thursday.

The Delhi Police on December 17 last removed all traffic barricades around the US Embassy at Chanakyapuri in New Delhi and opened the Nyaya Marg for public again.
The cops removed the traffic barricades after the government decided to withdraw all unreciprocated courtesies extended to the American Embassy and US diplomatic missions in New Delhi and elsewhere in the country.
