Last Updated 08 January 2014, 20:17 IST

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) on Wednesday achieved a major breakthrough when the tunnel boring machine (TBM) Helen tunnelled 229 metre below the City Railway Station underground (UG) Metro station safely, crossing 23 railway tracks.

Tunnelling work was inaugurated at Majestic on May 20, 2011, by the then chief minister B S Yeddyurappa. Actual burrowing commenced towards BRV Parade Grounds on May 31, 2011, by Helen and on July 21, 2011, by another TBM Margarita. They were to burrow the ‘up’ track (towards Baiyyappanahalli) and ‘down’ track (towards Mysore Road terminal) tunnels. The TBM will now be tunnelling from the City railway station UG station to the pocket track towards the west of Majestic underground Metro station.
