Look your best!

How many times have you gone for a wedding and felt under-dressed? Even felt out of place at a party because you are the only one wearing a suit? Each one of us has been in a situation like this at least once in life. Metrolife speaks to a section of Bangaloreans to ask them how important it is to look your best at an occasion.

According to Sheetal Bahirat, an image consultant, it’s really important to dress up for a wedding or party. “When you dress well, you look good and your self-confidence, which comes from within, increases. The way you react to people changes. If you aren’t dressed well, you may look distracted or worried while you are interacting with others. Your self-esteem goes down,” she explains. “More importantly, dressing up is a sign of respect for the hosts of the function. After all, you are your own brand wherever you go,” she reasons.

Pooja Nayak, a software engineer at HP who attends various formal events, feels that one’s clothes and shoes do add up to the personality. “Ill-fit or inappropriate clothes can make or break a certain situation. Once, I was not expecting to meet some senior officials on a working day and was just given an hour to prepare for a presentation.

Though I pulled it off in the end, my confidence would have been a lot better if I was dressed for the occasion,” she recalls. “I learnt from that experience that one should always be prepared with a good jacket that can act as both formal and causal wear and keep basics such as lip balm, mascara and deodorant stashed in your bag,” she advises. “Also remember to hold your head high, walk with confidence and keep that smile intact,” she adds.

For many, dressing up well is also a way to lift their spirits up. Says Asha Fernandez, proprietor of Elan Design Studio, a boutique that designs gowns and dresses, “Even if you are in a bad mood or feeling low, putting on a pair of jeans, a pretty shirt, some nice shoes and lipstick always cheers you up. You will notice that by the time you finish, you are in a good mood. In fact, something as simple as having a bath or freshening up lifts your mood.”

“Dressing up for a function makes the people who invited you happy as it shows that they’re important to you,” she adds. On many occasions, one sees a number of men dressed in casuals. But being a man does not give one the licence to dress shabbily, feels Madan Venkatesh, a film-maker. “What we are wearing simply shows how much we respect ourselves and the others too. It also helps us develop a level of comfort within ourselves and make an impression on others. Certain parameters with regards to clothing should be followed for occasions like weddings.”

As Asha Fernandez puts it, “We are slowly moving towards a culture, where equal importance is being given to men’s clothing. All these years, a bride used to be the focus at a wedding but now, things are changing. In fact, many soon-to-be brides come to me with their fiances and ask for tips. So men must keep in mind that they should be as fashionable as women.”
