Guv returns ordinance

Governor H R Bhardwaj is understood to have returned an ordinance sent by the State government recently, seeking to rectify an “error” pertaining to grant of salary to the staff of private aided educational institutions.

The government had sent the ordinance to the Governor after the State Cabinet’s decision. In the existing rules, it has been stated that the staff of all aided educational institutions will get revised salary (as per the grant-in-aid norms) from the date of their appointment. The government had decided to make it from the date of the government according grant-in-aid to the institution.

Rs 5,000 crore

Law Minister T B Jayachandra had said that the government would have to spend a whopping Rs 5,000 crore if it has to follow the existing rules. Hundreds of employees of these institutions, most of them retired employees, have filed cases in courts on the issue. Hence, it was decided to promulgate an ordinance.

But the Governor has returned it. The bill will now to tabled before the State legislature, which is scheduled to meet from January 22.
