UP cold wave claims 12 lives

Twelve people have died in cold-related incidents in Uttar Pradesh as the state continues to reel under severe cold waves.

The cold, coupled with a thick fog, disrupted normal life, with movement of trains being adversely affected. Over two dozen trains were reportedly running behind schedule, leaving thousands of passengers stranded.

A thick blanket of fog also covered the Lucknow airport, affecting flights, sources said.
Unnao remained the coldest place in the state on Friday as mercury plunged to 3 degrees Celsius.

The 12 deaths were reported in Varanasi, Kanpur, Ballia, Ghazipur and other districts. Schools up to class VIII would remain closed till January 14, officials said.
