Government announces Rs 15 lakh ex-gratia

Last Updated 15 January 2014, 18:41 IST

Home Minister K J George on Wednesday said that the funeral of sub-inspector Mallikarjun Bande was being delayed due to ‘miscommunication’ over the place of burial. “We had made necessary arrangements to give Bande complete State honours in Gulbarga upon the arrival of his body from Hyderabad. We had planned to transport his body to his native place thereafter,” he said.

“However, a ‘miscommunication’ about where the funeral was to be held led to a major law and order problem. The situation aggravated when Bande’s family demanded that the body be brought to Khajuri village, his native in Aland taluk and buried with State honours.”

George said that the government even tried to airlift Bande’s body in a helicopter to help the family complete the funeral before sunset. However, as the situation was tense in Gulbarga, the government could not make arrangements for the State funeral.

Benefits for family

The minister announced that the family will be paid Rs 15 lakh as compensation.

“The government will also be taking the responsibility of his children’s education. These benefits are in addition to the departmental benefits Bande’s family is eligible for, on account of his service to the State.” he added.

George left for Gulbarga along with Medical Education Minister Sharanprakash Patil and Director General and Inspector General of Police Lalrokhuma Pachau.
