The arena might have changed, but former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly’s popularity remains the same. Once feted for his leadership skills, he now seems to be the most sought after candidate for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.

His surprise visit to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at the state secretariat on Thursday afternoon fuelled speculations about him joining the Trinamool Congress. According to sources, the chief minister had indeed made an offer, but Ganguly refused, saying that he was not keen on joining any party.

He reportedly promised to support Banerjee in her causes related to sports and other socio-cultural endeavours. When accosted by journalists, Ganguly did not elaborate, but ruled out possibilities of him joining politics for now.

Speculations have been rife about Ganguly joining politics ever since he received an offer from the BJP, which he admitted in an interview with a leading Bengali daily.
