Pulse polio drive from Jan 19

1,68,336 kids in Dakshina Kannada district to get vaccination

The first phase of pulse polio immunisation drive for the year 2014, a part of the nation-wide drive, will commence on January 19 in the district. The drive gains more significance as the country has been moved out of the polio endemic list on January 13, 2014. 

Briefing reporters on Thursday, In-charge District Health Officer Dr Rathnakar said that the district health department has geared up for administering vaccination to 1,68,336 children below the age of five years during the four day vaccination drive. Vaccination will be administered in as many as 921 booths on January 19, and ASHAs and anganawadi workers will pay house to house visit to administer vaccination to left out children, on January 20 and 21 in rural areas and on January 22 in urban areas. 

According to a survey, of the total number of children to be administered pulse polio vaccination, an estimated 1,781 children belong to migrant workers. A total of 3,814 vaccinators, 193 supervisors, 548 health personnel, 2090 anganawadi workers, 922 ASHAs and 80 implementing officers, in-charge officers and medical officers have been deployed for the purpose. Mobile and transit units too will be put into service for the effective pulse polio drive. Vaccine containers will reach the taluk centres on Friday and cold storage facility is ready for preserving the vaccine, the In-charge DHO said.

The second phase of the vaccination will commence on February 19. 

Last case in 1999

The last case of polio was reported in the district in 1999, the last case reported in the State was in 2007 and in the country in 2011. 

On examining the sewage waste, where human excreta flows, polio virus were detected in Mumbai and other high risk prone places till two years ago. No such test was conducted in Mangalore as the city does not come under high risk prone area, said District Reproduction and Child Health Officer Dr Rukmini M.
