Second infiltration bid of 2014 foiled

A day after senior Indian and Pakistani army officials met, Indian forces foiled a second attempt at infiltration across the Line of Control (LoC) this year in the Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday.

A defence spokesman said they suspected a group of three to four heavily armed militants in Krishnaghati forward of Mendhar sector in Poonch at 8:30 am.  “Alert troops spotted the intruders 150 metres inside our territory and challenged them. However, they continued to close in towards our post, following which they were fired upon,” he said.

Sources told Deccan Herald that the militants managed to escape back into Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (Pok) after finding a heavy military presence on the Indian side.

“The terrorists dispersed in the jungle following the firing which lasted for five to ten minutes,” the spokesman said, adding that a massive search operation was launched in the area.

The latest infiltration bid came barely 24-hours after brigadiers of both armies met at Chakan Da Bagh crossing point in Poonch to discuss the recent ceasefire violation in the area and how to ensure peace and tranquility along the LoC.
