State government’s Yashaswini scheme will be extended to un-organised labour classes in the city limits, and the government will bear the registration fee, said M Shivanna, Chairman, National Commission of Safai Karmacharis, here on Monday.

He was speaking after inaugurating the ‘Street Vendors Day’ celebrations organised by the Mysore District Street Vendors Association and Mysore Street Vendors Co-operative Society.Majority of the street vendors are not able to keep good health due to work pressure and unhealthy working conditions. Health schemes of the State government would benefit when they are diagnosed with major illnesses, he added. The government has sanctioned Rs 2 crore to Mysore City Corporation (MCC) for the welfare of street vendors but still not spent.

Corporator Sandesh Swamy said that in order to preserve the beauty of the city, street vendors were banned from near Mysore Palace and Sayyaji Rao road, and it was proposed to shift them to  a hawker’s zone. However, even after years, the project is yet to take off, he lamented.
