A 60-year-old woman was allegedly hacked to death in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghazipur district, about 350 km from here, after she objected to the chopping of a tree by local contractors.
The woman, Bela Devi, a widow and a resident of Navali village, tried to stop the contractors from chopping a “Mohwa” tree, commonly known as Indian Butter Tree, close to her home, when she was attacked by Santosh Singh, one of the contractors, late on Sunday evening, police sources said.
Singh allegedly hit the woman repeatedly with an axe and killed her on the spot, the police said.
