Carts selling dosas and chaats are quite common in the City. But how many of them actually sell healthy food?

‘Sprouts King’, located in Kasturinagar, is one of the few! Selling a variety of sprouts at a reasonable price, ‘Sprouts King’ is your answer to healthy fast food. Prabhu S, who opened ‘Sprouts King’ last year, always had the dream of starting a place like this. “This place was my idea as I wanted people to stop eating junk food,” he explains.

Prabhu is no stranger to the food market as he has previously worked in chains like US Pizza, Pizza Hut and Kaati Zone. From being a restaurant manager to an R&D assistant chef, Prabhu has worked in most segments of the food industry. “When I came up with the idea, I first started working on it part time. However now, I am into this business full time,” he adds.

A tiny place from a distance, the cart houses a variety of sprouts displayed beautifully on the counter. “I actually make 18 varieties of sprouts but cannot display them all,” he says. A customer can choose from pulses like lobiya, green gram, horse gram, peanuts, green peas, channa dal and white lobiya. They can also make a combination of their choice. But knowing the love Indians have for spices, Prabhu decided to introduce ‘fried sprouts’ to the menu. Ideal to be consumed in the winter season, it’s a hot dish with a mix of sprouts, chopped onions, tomatoes and a spice mix, created by Prabhu himself. But with summer around the corner, the raw sprouts salad is the right choice at the time being as it is cooling (with lime and pieces of chopped cucumber) and refreshing.

Be it salad, fried and plain sprouts, every bowl priced at Rs 20 and takeaway at Rs 30. Prabhu explains that the entire process of making sprouts takes a total of three days. “I have a sprouting kit specially for that,” he informs.

Prabhu has opened another cart in Kammanahalli opposite Jal Vayu Vihar and aims to branch out even further. “I want to open a shop in future dedicated specially to sprouts. I am not doing it just for financial purposes. My main aim is to promote healthy eating among Bangaloreans,” he explains.

With many offices, colleges and gyms located around the area, ‘Sprouts King’ always has customers stopping by for a healthy munch. Says Rakesh, a professional with HP, “I pass this place regularly and had always wanted to try it out. So I thought of coming here with my wife. The sprouts here are really nice,” he says.

While his wife Deepthi loves the concept. “Sprouts are healthy and nice. More people should come up with stalls like these and more people should eat at places like these,” she notes. ‘Sprouts King’ is located opposite Cafe Coffee Day in Kasturinagar and is open on all days between 5.30 pm and 9.30 pm.
