Cubbon Park set to become prime tourist spot

Last Updated 14 February 2014, 20:40 IST

The entire stretch of the Cubbon Park area may soon get a facelift if things go as per plan.

Heritage buildings, and even the newer ones will become tourism, recreation and educational centres. If this project turns out to be a success, it will be extended to other localities, with the aim of developing historic elements in the City.

The Bangalore Political Action Committee (BPAC), along with urban experts, architects and Bangaloreans, is looking to revive the Cubbon Park area. The purpose is not just to restore the park, but also the Bal Bhavan, museum, library, band stand and stadium.Experts and historians say this concept should be extended to other areas as well as it will help restore the historical value of Bangalore, which is presently seen only as an IT capital.

Noted historian Suresh Moona said: “It is a good idea as the Cubbon Park area is of great historical importance. But the same should be done in other parts of Bangalore, like Ulsoor, for instance, which has churches, gurudwaras and military areas. The idea can then be expanded to Basavanagudi, K R market, Malleswaram, Adugodi and Whitefield. Each block of Bangalore is a potential tourist spot and should be developed. This will make Bangalore more interesting.”

“We are working with the government and various citizen action groups on this. The public too is welcome to voice their suggestions. The aim is to have more activities here. This central point should become a huge tourist attraction by itself,” Revathy Ashok, Managing Trustee and Chief Coordination Officer- BPAC, told Deccan Herald.

She added that all ideas will be consolidated and submitted to the government for approval soon. Director of the Horticulture department, D L Maheshwar, said that it was up to the government to decide the matter.

Adding to this, civic analyst and coach of the Karnataka Tourism Vision Group V Ravichandar, said: “Cubbon Park can be considered a pilot project. This can be regarded a learning ground and then extended to other places. More options will make Bangalore a more interesting place.”
