Nursing education authority in State in 15 days: Minister

A State-wide Nursing Education Authority will be set up in 15 days to monitor the diploma courses  in nursing and ensure transparency in them, Minister for Medical Education Sharanprakash Patil has said.

The Karnataka Nursing and Paramedical Sciences Education (Regulation) Authority Bill, 2012, was passed by the Legislature sometime ago. The bill was considered necessary to establish an authority for systematic functioning of, and to maintain standards in, the education and development of nursing and paramedical professionals in the State, Patil told reporters on the sidelines of the launch of the Karnataka Medical Directory here on Tuesday.

An online platform, the directory lists over 25,000 doctors from across the State. It provides each doctor’s contact number, specialisation, institution working for and the previous achievements, and is aimed at helping patients choose the right medical professionals.

Protest by colleges

Representatives of many nursing, paramedical schools and colleges have been protesting on the premises of the Karnataka State Diploma in Nursing Examinations Board here against the changes implemented recently, including those in pass percentage and allotment of examination centres.

But the Karnataka State Association of the Management of Nursing and Allied Health Science Institutions has asserted that the changes would be effective if nursing professionals were given higher posts in the proposed authority as that would ensure the government did not dominate it.
