Sudeep is a happy man. And why not? As an actor, things are going great for him and as a captain, he has just lifted the CCL (Celebrity Cricket League) trophy for the second consecutive year.

Sudeep has also been shuttling between cricket practice sessions for the just concluded finals of the CCL, which Karnataka Bulldozers won again. Sudeep is more than relieved when he says that his task as captain of the team has been achieved. “When you win the first time, people may call it a fluke but here, we’ve won again for the second consecutive time. This proves that the boys worked really hard and the victory wasn’t a false one. In fact, all the teams in CCL have worked very hard to get to where they are,” says Sudeep.

On the film front, Sudeep will be seen in be seen in Maanikya, which also features Krazy Star Ravichandran in the role of his father and Varalaxmi Sharath Kumar playing his love interest. The film is set for an Ugadi release.

Sudeep believes that he is less of a director and more of a storyteller. He confesses that he has a lot of stories to tell and that is precisely why he has ventured out to make movies. As an actor, Sudeep is always open to working with directors who are not only capable of narrating a good story but also have the potential to bring out the best in him. Sudeep says that even after all these years, he is never tired of experimenting.

He’s not one to let the actor in him be cowed down by the tried and tested formulae. He has gambled with every genre over the last decade or so – exploring, experimenting and exhausting every nuance of the characters he has essayed. Known to design his roles, Sudeep always adds a tinge of glamour here and a touch of weirdness there to provide the subtle actor in him a wider canvas. “It is mannerisms that make a man,” Sudeep feels.

Sudeep looks at every new opportunity as a new beginning. He still has people telling him that he is remembered for his remarkable performance in Eega. “Every script has something new for me to learn,” he adds. Now that he has ventured into Bollywood in a big way, where does he think the South Indian film industry lies vis-a-vis Bollywood?

“There’s good talent in the South but the Bollywood image of the idli sambar tag of the Southern film world still remains,” Sudeep says and adds, “while acting in South is all about being loud and colourful, what clicks up North is subtlety and loads of attitude.”
Undeterred by criticism that his films are mostly remakes, Sudeep points out that they are far from cut, copy and paste jobs. “I am here to entertain and as long as I succeed in that I don’t think remakes should be much of a problem,” he signs off.
