Citizens told to surrender licensed arms

Last Updated 11 March 2014, 20:14 IST

The City police have directed citizens possessing licensed weapons to surrender them before the jurisdictional police before March 19. The direction, issued by the police commissioner in view of the model poll code of conduct, is aimed at ensuring peaceful elections.

The following categories, however, have been exempted from the directive: The State and Central government agencies which have weapons; public sector undertakings such as banks, security agencies and such other agencies having weapons and class-I officers of the State and Union government possessing weapons. The exemption is applicable to only those weapons given for security purposes.

An application seeking exemption should be submitted to the respective deputy commissioners of police. The weapons could be collected back after the  elections are over, according to a press release.
