An alleged attempt to steal question papers from the school proved costly for a 14-year-old student, who had a fatal fall from the school building in Hanumanthanagar police limits on Tuesday night.

The boy, Vijay Kumar, a student of Class VIII at Evershine English School, Kalidasa Circle, Srinagar, is suspected to have fallen to death from the four-storey school building, when he allegedly tried to break into the school to steal question papers for the final exams scheduled on Wednesday. Kumar was the eldest son of Ramu, a construction labourer. The family lives a couple of blocks away from the school.
Two of his classmates informed a police constable that Kumar had fallen from the school building and was killed on the spot. When the police rushed to the spot around 8.30 pm, the gates were locked and they had to get them opened after alerting the school authorities. The security guard was not present at the gates, as he had gone for dinner. The police found a rope tied around the victim’s waist.

“The scene of the crime prima facie suggested that the deceased was not alone. At least two or more persons were present when the accident occurred. Probably, the boys would have gone to the terrace, tied a rope around the deceased’s waist and tried to let him down to a lower floor, to break into the building. The boys may have not been able to hold the weight of Kumar and the rope might have also snapped,” said a senior police officer.

One of his classmates said Kumar had claimed that once he got the question papers on Tuesday night, he would sell them to his classmates. However, Kumar’s family members have denied the allegations.

Ramu, the boy’s father, said Kumar had returned home after attending tuitions and again had gone out, informing him that he was going to a friend’s house. He said his son was intelligent and blamed the school authorities for their negligence.

The school does not have any CCTV installed on its premises. A case has been registered and investigations are being carried out. Police said the boys who alerted them about the incident are being questioned.
