I have a dream for East Delhi, says guru in poll fray

Bharatiya Janata Party’s candidate from East Delhi constituency Maheish Girri says he hopes give a facelift to his constituency.

In his door-to-door campaign, he uses “NaMo” chants to seek vote.

The spiritual guru turned politician is a good orator and he is addressing people with what he says are “progressive ideas”, just like the party’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi.

During his campaigns in the diverse localities of East Delhi constituency, he continues the “new hope” agenda.

“East Delhi is one of the most left out constituencies and it needs a lot of efforts. There are dozens of places that can be turned into business hubs. For example, we can turn Gandhi Nagar as a fashion hub. There are hundreds of small cloth factories in the area,” he said.

On Tuesday, scores of people gathered around him when he reached Preet Vihar in the constituency. Sitting on top of a vehicle with dozens of heavy garlands around his neck, the softspoken leader greeted his supporters by doing a namaskaar over his head.

Preet Vihar is one of the most posh areas of East Delhi and a majority of people belongs to upper middle class. His wagon has a small loudspeaker that plays the BJP’s newly launched anthem “Main desh nahi mitne dunga”.

During his brief speech, he said, “This is the time for people of Delhi to choose BJP. This is the only party that can bring development to this constituency. You have been witnessing Congress’ rule for the past 10 years; this is the time to change it.”

He climbed down of his vehicle and hugged and greeted supporters.

The three-vehicle convoy of the 39-year-old former Art of Living member then moved towards the most interior area of East Delhi – Sarita Vihar. This area has a mixed population of middle class and unauthorised colonies.

With separate agendas for separate constituencies, Girri sought votes from residents of this area on claims of better road transport, water supply and other basic amenities.

“Modiji has a dream for the entire country; similarly, I have a dream for East Delhi constituency. I have to work on women’s security, small scale industries and other issues. One of the primary agendas is to provide justice to slum dwellers, who have been denied for the past 65 years,” he told Deccan Herald.

Girri ended his Tuesday’s campaign after addressing a small public gathering in Jasola.
