The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) as part of its initiative to create a tobacco-free society has booked 16,288 cases and collected Rs 32.57 lakh as fine from smokers in the bus stations.

Speaking at a press conference organised by Institute of Public Health on Monday, B N S Reddy, Deputy Inspector General of Police and Director (Security and Vigilance), KSRTC, said the fine was being collected from April 2013. He said that in March 2014 alone, 2,345 people had been fined. Reddy said the rule was implemented at 77 KSRTC depots in 14 districts.

“The KSRTC and BMTC have already taken up the initiative. North-East (Gulbarga) and North-West (Hubli) road transport corporations have been asked to take it up as well,” he said. On complaint redress authority, he said that they were contemplating asking the person in-charge of individual bus stands to receive complaints.
