The State government has ordered a CID probe and a magisterial inquiry into the incident wherein the Anti Naxal Force shot dead a 23-year old civilian in Thanikodu forest checkpost in Sringeri on Saturday mistaking him for a maoist.

Home Minister K J George, who was briefed by top police officers about the incident on Sunday, ordered the CID probe.

The State government has also announced a compensation of Rs five lakh to the family of Kabeer, the victim.

The incident occurred when five persons transporting cattle in a mini-truck from Thirthahalli to Mangalore were stopped at the checkpost in the early hours of Saturday.

Kabeer reportedly started running on seeing the ANF personnel. The latter opened fire suspecting him to be a maoist, killing him on the spot.

While Kabeer was killed, Pramod and Rafeeq escaped and reached Mangalore, while police arrested Umar Farooq and Sarfaraj was missing.

He was hiding in a car and was found later, in-charge IGP (Western Range) R Hitendra told Deccan Herald. He also clarified that none of the four was injured in the incident.

He refused to comment further as the case has been handed over to the CID. Muslim Central Committee president K S M Masood, addressing a protest rally in Mangalore, said the compensation offered by the government to Kabeer’s family was not acceptable, and demanded at least Rs 30 lakh to the family, considering the young age of the deceased.
