Advani lauds TN's rainbow coalition

Last Updated 21 April 2014, 20:02 IST

Veteran BJP Leader and former Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani on Monday described the rainbow alliance formed by his party in Tamil Nadu as an alternative to the ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and the opposition Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), and said this front would help the saffron party in forming the next government at the Centre.

Addressing an election meeting here, he predicted that after the elections, AICC President Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will demit office and a new government will be in place by June-end. Exuding confidence about a resounding victory for the BJP, Advani while canvassing votes for New Justice Party candidate A C Shanmugam, said the rainbow coalition headed by the BJP would register a stupendous victory.

Noting that the strong alliance formed by the BJP in the state has changed the battlescape, he said the voters have been seeing it as the "principal combatant" in the electoral contest, which was hitherto dominated by the two Dravidian parties -- DMK and AIADMK.

In his only election rally in the state for the April 24 Lok Sabha polls, Advani said, "I am extremely glad to find that the situation has basically changed."

"The rainbow alliance led by BJP and its leader Narendra Modi has been regarded by many people as the "principal combatant in this particular battle," he said.

Touching upon the vexatious Cauvery issue involving Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, Advani said the BJP had "duly considered" the Cauvery issue, stoutly denying charges that the BJP did not address the problems faced by Tamil Nadu. He said when the Vajpayee Government was at the Centre, it had formed a task force for the interlinking of rivers.
