'No need for CID probe into Kabeer's death'

Last Updated 23 April 2014, 19:35 IST

BJP MLA from Karkala V Sunil Kumar on Wednesday urged the State government not to conduct a CID probe into the firing incident, at a checkpost near Sringeri in Chikmagalur district recently, as the victim was a cattle smuggler.

In a letter to Home Minister K J George, he alleged that Kabeer was part of a gang that used to steal and smuggle cattle, especially cows.

Several cases have been registered against him in Moodbidri, Mulki, Suratkal and Bajpe.
The Anti-Naxal Force (ANF) personnel had no option, but to open fire, when he tried to flee.

He said the police have recovered a vehicle in which 22 cattle heads were being transported. It is unfortunate that some people are trying to give communal colour to the incident, he said, adding that there is no need for any inquiry and the government should not give any compensation to the victim, Sunil Kumar said.

CID, judicial probes begin

Meanwhile, R Chetan Kumar, the Chikmagalur district Superintendent of Police, told reporters in Chikmagalur that a CID investigation and a judicial probe into the death of Kabeer had begun.

An officer of the rank of SP and two of the rank of DySP were part of the investigation. Kumar said that no personnel had been suspended with regard to the incident so far.
