The abundant goodness of apples

Last Updated 25 April 2014, 19:02 IST

We’ve all, way too often, heard the saying “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”. There are several factors that have earned this fruit such a status.

n Chewing an apple stimulates the production of saliva in your mouth, which lowers the bacterial levels in the mouth, which in turn, reduces tooth decay.

n Several tests have indicated that regular consumption of apples can keep cancer, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases at bay.

n Apples have soluble fibre in them, that binds with fats in the intestine and breaks it down, thereby reducing bad cholesterol.

n The fibre found in apples is known to help with both, constipation and diarrhoea. It also prevents anal hemorrhoids, as it aids in good bowel movement and reduces the need to exert pressure.

n You don’t really need to follow strict detox diets. An apple a day will cleanse your liver for you.

n Apples are rich in anti-oxidants, which are known to keep cataract, wrinkles and other ageing skin problems at bay.

Apple remedies

n An apple a day taken after food, helps in recovering from nervous weakness.

n To improve health of teeth and gums, munch on an apple.

n To stop diarrhoea, blend banana and apple juice, and drink it twice a day.

n For a sluggish and tired body, a glass of apple juice with ¼ tsp of cinnamon powder and ½ tsp of honey, is an instant rejuvenator.

n For burning sensation in the eyes, or while urinating, drink a glass of apple juice regularly, as it has hydrating qualities.
