Poll panel notice to Kejriwal

Last Updated 11 May 2014, 20:00 IST

The Election Commission on Sunday served a notice to Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal for violating the poll code by telling voters of Amethi constituency in UP that voting for the BJP or the Congress would be tantamount to betraying the nation and the God.

The EC, which is prima facie of the opinion that Kejriwal violated the Model Code of Conduct, had asked the AAP leader to send his explanation by Tuesday.

“If someone in Amethi votes for the Congress; do not mind my brothers, but I must say that he would betray the nation. Hope I am not saying anything wrong or saying too much. I am saying it again, if a single vote goes to Congress or BJP, then you will be betraying the God and the nation,” Kejriwal purportedly said while addressing an election meeting in Amethi, where his party’s Kumar Viswas is taking on Rahul Gandhi.

Rahul is seeking re-election from Amethi. The BJP has fielded actress-turned-politician Smriti Irani against him.

Kejriwal, who is contesting from Varanasi, made the controversial remark while addressing an election meeting in Amethi on May 2 last.
