Congress wins 42 seats in Arunachal Assembly polls

Facing a rout all over the country, the Congress retained power in Arunachal Pradesh by winning 42 seats and securing a majority in the 60-member Assembly.

According to the results declared so far, Congress has bagged 42 seats, including 11 uncontested, and leading in 5.

BJP won four seats and was leading in five. People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA) won three seats and was leading in two. An independent won one seat in Tawang .

Prominent Congress winners include former chief minister Jarbom Gamlin (Liromoba), Speaker Wanglin Lowangdong (Borduria-Bogapani), deputy speaker Jomde Kena (Likabali, RWD Minister Kumar Waii (Bameng), and Minister of Department of Tirap, Changlang and Longding (DoTCL), transport and cooperation Newlai Tingkhatra (Kanubari). However, some of its stalwarts lost. 

The result of Kanubari constituency would be countermanded and re-poll ordered as the winner Tingkhatra died on May 7 at a Gurgaon hospital following cardiac arrest, election office sources said.

Chief Minister Nabam Tuki had won uncontested from Sagalee constituency along with Power Electrical, Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister Tanga Byaling (Nacho) and Tourism Minister Pema Khandu (Mukto), who were among the 11 to be elected unopposed.
