Awards to Ananthamurthy, 11 others

The Department of Kannada and Culture will present its annual awards for the year 2012 to 12 eminent personalities, including writer U R Ananthamurthy, musician Prof R Vishveshwaran and writer Kayyara Kinhanna Rai.

The awards will be presented by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on May 23 at Ravindra Kalakshetra, according to Kannada and Culture Minister Umashree.

The Basava Puraskara, for which Ananthamurthy has been chosen, carries a purse of Rs 10 lakh.

Other recipients of various awards are: Kayyara Kinhanna Rai (Pampa award)  R Vishveshwaran (T Chowdaiah award); B N Sumitra Bai (Danachintamani Attimabbe), Kum Veerabhadrappa (Prof K G Kundanagar Gadinada Sahitya Prashasti), Markandeya Avadhani (Kumvaravyasa), Pandit Sangameshwara Guruva (Nijaguna Purandara), Somasundaram (Santa Shishunala Sharif), Vasundhara Doreswamy (Natyarani Shantala), Lakshmibai Enagi (Gubbi Veeranna), U Bhaskar Rao (Venkatappa) and G B Hamsanandacharya (Jakkanachari).

The Chowdaiah award carries a purse of Rs 5 lakh and the rest of the awards Rs 3 lakh.
