Former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal was sent to jail on Wednesday after he refused to pay a bail bond worth Rs 10,000 in a defamation case filed by BJP leader Nitin Gadkari in a Delhi court.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) members soon converged and staged a massive protest outside the Tihar Jail, where Kejriwal is lodged. The police had to use “mild force” to disperse the crowd from the high-security area and Section 144 of the CrPC was imposed outside the jail to prevent further protests. Kejriwal has been sent to judicial custody till Friday.

Earlier in the day, Kejriwal had “apologised” to the people of Delhi for resigning as Delhi chief minister. He also made a u-turn from his stand of requesting seven days time from Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung to seek a referendum from Delhiites on formation of government or elections and said that party will go for fresh polls.

“After considering all aspects, I apologise to the people, who wanted the AAP government in Delhi to continue. In the meeting our legislature party held today (Wednesday), we have unanimously decided to seek a fresh election for the state Assembly,” he said.
